Play Submissions - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
When will I find out if my play has been selected?
You’ll receive a notification of our final selections by March 1. If selected, you’ll have ample time to prepare before our season announcement at our Season Reveal Party in mid-May.
What is the Season Reveal Party, and what role do directors play in it?
At the Season Reveal Party, each director of a selected play has the opportunity to pitch their show to our community. This event is a fantastic chance to generate excitement, connect with potential actors and crew, and attract underwriters for your production. Directors can share their vision, discuss key roles, and build enthusiasm among those interested in being part of the show—onstage, backstage, or as supporters.
What experience is required to direct at StageCenter?
We look for directors with experience as a director, assistant director, or stage manager, preferably at StageCenter. If you’re newer to directing, we encourage you to get involved in other production roles this season to gain valuable experience before submitting a play for consideration.
What kind of budget can I expect for my production?
Show budgets at StageCenter vary from $0 to $750, depending on the level of underwriting secured for each production. We ask directors to plan resourcefully and creatively within these limits.
Do I need to secure the rights for my proposed play?
No. Do not attempt to secure rights yourself. If your play is selected, StageCenter will handle acquiring rights and scripts.
Can I submit a public domain play?
Absolutely! Public domain shows are encouraged, as they provide creative freedom and streamline the rights process, allowing us to consider allocating more resources toward production quality.
What productions has StageCenter done in the past?
For information about our past productions, see Previous Seasons as well as our history.
What genres has StageCenter typically produced?
StageCenter's past productions have represented genres such as comedy, drama, classic/period pieces, mystery/thriller, radio plays, holiday and family shows, satire and dark comedy, melodrama, social and political commentary, romantic drama, and reader’s theater.
Will I receive feedback if my play isn’t selected?
While we can’t guarantee detailed feedback for all applicants, we’re happy to provide general insights upon request. We encourage everyone to reapply with new or refined proposals in future seasons.
What if I want to see a play performed at StageCenter but don’t want to direct it?
We welcome play suggestions! Occasionally, we have directors looking for productions to bring to the stage, and your recommendation might inspire them. While it’s rare for us to choose a play without an attached director, we’re always interested in hearing ideas from our community.
